THE CAPRICA STORY

Joseph Adama and Daniel Graystone

It is 58 years before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies (and the beginning of Battlestar Galactica). On the planet Caprica, the seat of government and culture in the Colonies, a seemingly idyllic and advanced society is beginning to feel the corrupting effects of rapid advances in technology, the strain of religious extremism, and the not-so-subtle influence of a powerful underworld:
  • Robotic servants have become a part of everyday life on Caprica.
  • Caprican teens plug in to cyberclubs where they can engage in virtual sex, violence, and murder without their parents' knowledge.
  • Racial and cultural rifts between the Colonies are widening. Inter-colonial prejudices run deep, sometimes leading to violent uprisings and intertribal wars.
  • The traditional polytheistic religion upon which Colonial society is based is challenged by a growing monotheistic movement, regarded by many (including the government) as a blasphemous, extremist, terrorist threat.
  • The influence of organized crime -- most notably the Tauron "Halafa" -- permeates Caprican society, including the highest levels of government.
The story of Caprica centers on two men: Daniel Graystone, the scientific genius responsible for most of Caprica's advanced cybernetics; and Joseph Adams, a lawyer with close ties to the Tauron mob.

Graystone is on the verge of perfecting a prototype robotic soldier, and Adams is trying to distance himself and his family from their Halafa ties, when tragedy strikes both men. Their daughters, Zoe Graystone and Tamara Adams, are killed in a terrorist attack by monotheistic extremists (a group to which Zoe Graystone belonged). The two men become unlikely partners in a desperate plan to blend cybernetic technology with virtual reality to bring their lost daughters back to life.

To accomplish this, Joseph Adams must reconnect with his Tauron heritage and call upon his mobster brother for help; and Daniel Graystone must acquire AI technology from a rival industrialist to perfect the robot warrior -- the "Cylon" -- that he wishes to use as a body for his resurrected daughter.

Advanced review of the pilot (I've not read it as I'm dodging spoilers until the DVD release). Thanks Kaley222 from the BSG Wiki (http://www.battlestargalactica-wiki.com) for pointing this out!

I don't usually pre-order DVDs (especially not DVDs of films or shows I haven't seen), but had to sign up early for this one... after the amazing final season of Battlestar, a year was just too long to wait!
